Third of people still not saving enough

A third of people are not sure whether they'll have enough money to live on when they retire, a survey by Which? Money reveals.

The Consumers' Association magazine says people, on average, expect they'll need £312 a week after tax for a comfortable retirement while the basic state pension is currently £84.25 a week.

The magazine says this means there's a gap of around £12,000 a year between the amount people want to live on in retirement and what the basic state pension will provide.  Only 12% were very confident they would have a comfortable retirement.

Which? Money editor Martyn Hocking said it was worrying that more than a third of people weren't currently saving enough for their retirement.  He said: "The basic rule is that you should start saving for your retirement as early as you can - the longer you leave it, the more you'll need to save."
