UK's elderly population reaches record high

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, over the past two years the number of pensioners in the UK over the age of 85 has risen by 5.9% and the percentage of over 65-year-olds has increased by 31%.

Head of pensions strategy at the Royal London Group Steve Bee commented: “In 2006, just about one person in every five in the UK was under the age of 16, but one in every six of us is already in bus pass territory. These guys are the post first world war baby boomers, who have the second world war baby boomers hot on their heels.”
